Top Ten "Gateway" Books/Authors in My Reading Journey

It's Top Ten Tuesday time! I am linking up for the meme over at The Broke and the Bookish again this week. This week is about "gateway" books/authors, and I love the way that they spoke about it on their site today: "All of us readers have those books that really started us on our way to becoming book lovers. It could be something we read as young children, or it could be a book we picked up in adulthood after years of a reading drought. Or, it could be an author or book that introduced us to a new favorite genre. This week's Top Ten Tuesday puts a spotlight on those books and authors that we credit with our bookishness."

1. Dreamland - Sarah Dessen
Honestly, all of Sarah Dessen's books could probably be on this list. It seems like every time I get into a series reading slump I read that she has a new book coming out and I get excited about reading all over again. I have read all of her books, but this was one of the first ones that I read, and it was what made me begin to fall in love with YA contemporaries. Dessen had me interested in reading in middle school which is something that I still appreciate very much.

2. Harry Potter Series - J.K. Rowling
I fell in love with the Harry Potter series from the moment that my fourth grade teacher began reading one of the books to the class (this was back before everyone freaked out about them and banned all of them being read together in class and what not). I can't remember which one it was now, but I remember being quite attentive as my teacher read. I wasted no time picking up the whole series as they came out and reading them myself. At the time it was all that I was reading, though.

3. Twilight - Stephenie Meyer
I know, some people might give me a hard time. Sometimes I'm afraid to admit that I enjoyed this series since a lot of my friends really hated it, especially if they were big fans of HP. I can't help it though, I really did like the series (the books are much better than the movies, too). This is the first series I read after being done with HP, and I have to admit that it got me back into reading again, though I have not enjoyed any other vampire series since this. I'm not sure why, but I guess they are just not my thing.

4. Speak - Laurie Halse Anderson
I LOVE this book, and it is absolutely one of my favorites, and has been for many years now. I read this one pretty early into high school, and then ended up buying my own copy of the book and I have read it several times since then. I really enjoyed the movie as well (Kristen Stewart pre-Twilight, which I feel makes a huge difference). This one is another contemporary, though it has it's dark parts. I guess I tend to be drawn towards that, though.

5. Divergent - Veronica Roth
Bring on the dystopian novels! While I read The Hunger Games before this, and it was okay, this one really sold the dystopian thing for me. It is all I want to read right now (okay, that is an exaggeration), but I really enjoy picking up new ones these days. Have any that you suggest? I would definitely be interested in checking it out! I also looooove the movie, and have seen it twice already since it released. I have no doubt I could watch it over and over again.

Okay, so my list isn't actually a top ten, but these are the top 5 that come to mind and I am fairly exhausted at the moment, so it is to bed for me!

  1. Hi Tiffany!

I am also doing the A to Z Challenge and focusing on picture books because I am a children's picture book author. Good luck with the challenge!

    Take care,

  2. I loved Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson! I read it in high school and I felt sad because of the way people treated her without knowing the full story.

I nominated your blog for the Liebster Award

    1. I know! It was so upsetting to see how she was treated when no one even asked what really happened or anything, such a good book! Thank you for nominating me! :]
