Review: If I am being honest, I am not the biggest fan of paranormal books in general. It is not a genre that I was ever very big on, though I am not sure why that is. I guess because it's usually pretty far from contemporary, which is my favorite thing to read. Or maybe it is because most paranormal books usually seem to be the same thing with different characters and names. I was very glad that this book was not that way, though. It was different; funny, witty, and quite realistic. It kept me reading, which was something that I really appreciated.
The characters were wonderful. This is the first time I have really read a book where there have been two authors working together, so I was interested to see how that would go. It was nice that they each obviously took on one of the main characters and had their own voice. Christy was awesome; I loved her attitude and how real she seemed. She had to deal with bullying, and you get to see her react in a similar manner as many teenagers. Adam is wonderful as well; it is great having gay characters in books, especially when they are open about it. That is why the two bond so well, and have been friends for so long. They have both been bullied a lot, and are dealing with a lot of stuff together.
Honestly, I loved how all of the focus in the book was not completely on the paranormal parts, and that sometimes it even seemed like it could be a contemporary, at least at the beginning of the book. It was a bit slow at first, but it definitely began to pick up and was difficult to put down. I love all of the other characters that we are introduced to and that join their group, and eventually they become their own little group of misfits. That is one of my favorite things to read about in books in fact; the characters really do make the book.
Ultimately, this book was one that I enjoyed very much. While it had the paranormal (especially more at the end) and it had emotional parts, it was also funny and light hearted at times as well. It gave a little bit of everything, which I can appreciate very much. I do not want to say too much else so that I do not give much away for those who will pick it up themselves, but I would definitely recommend the book to other YA fans.
